The reason we're not often there for others...is that we're not there for ourselves.

Are you experiencing a mental health emergency?
The reason we're not often there for others...is that we're not there for ourselves.
- Pema Chodron -
When was the last time you were able to focus on yourself, in a truly private, quiet, environment with no distractions?
People come into therapy with their own solutions. My job is to create a unique experience for each individual, family, or group, to uncover and build upon strengths they already possess.
I seek to make the therapy room a safe and non-judgmental place for all emotional experiences, and a place to make peace with parts of ourselves that we fear and dislike. As clients build compassion for themselves, they find their compassion for others growing, and the strength to examine and change their lives for greater happiness and fulfillment.
My specialties include individual psychotherapy, group therapy, clinical supervision, and clinical consultation.
I work frequently with family of origin/attachment issues, Depression, Anxiety, low self-esteem, Mood Disorders, Personality Disorders, relationships, boundaries, impulsivity, and phase of life changes.
My therapeutic modalities include Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Modern Analytic Group Psychotherapy, Object Relations, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Mindfulness techniques.
Influential clinicians include Yalom, Winnicot, Linehan, Nancy McWilliams, Louis Ormont, Jung, and yes, Freud.
I graduated from Columbia University's School of Social Work in 2007, and after working in non-profits for several years, began offering private practice psychotherapy in 2011.
In 2023, I became a Certified Group Psychotherapist and a Clinical Social Work Supervisor for those seeking an LCSW in Texas.
For undergraduate education, I attended the University of Texas at Austin, where I earned a BA in English Literature and Cultural Anthropology.
Personal interests and experiences that inform my therapeutic style include philosophy, existentialism, music, pop culture, physical fitness for mental health, humor, literature, parenting, and creativity.
I am an active member of the National Association of Social Workers, the American Group Psychotherapy Association, and a former Board Member of the Austin Group Psychotherapy Society. I am a student at the Center for Group Studies and a member of the Clinical Social Work Association.
Ali Takata, LMSW has openings for adult clients, both virtually and in-person. She is an experienced and talented clinician who is completing her supervision hours with me. Please contact her directly if you are interested in receiving therapy from her.
